Demolition and Hazardous Building Material

Mr. Graham served as Principal-In-Charge and LSP for this comprehensive decommissioning program which involved demolition management, industrial hygiene, hazardous materials, and environmental consulting and remediation services for the Salem Harbor Power Plant demolition project in Salem, Massachusetts.
These services were conducted on a 65-acre site located on the Salem Harbor Waterfront abutted by residences, for a 100,000+ square foot coal-fired power plant that housed four steam generating units constructed between 1951 and 1972. Discharge stacks reached 400-feet in height, and the main plant exceeded eight stories. The site also included associated marine transfer terminal infrastructure, aboveground storage tanks, coal storage facilities, other ancillary structures, utilities, and roadways.

Preparation of successful MADEP Beneficial Use Determination (BUD) application, requiring material testing of paint and other coatings, such as for PCBs, metals, and VOCs.
A majority of demolition metals were removed from the site by barge and shipped to Boston for recycling. Removal of these materials took place by water through the port terminal facility on-site, dramatically reducing ground transportation. Asphalt, concrete, and brick were also re-used as fill material on-site under the BUD permit, eliminating trucking and landfill. The recycling program avoided landfill disposal of approximately 95% of all demolition materials.
